Those of you who have already browsed the Ginger & May shop will know that we specialise in children's bedlinen, furnishings and accessories. You will hopefully also have noticed that we generally avoid designs that are based on characters, TV favourites or which are overly themed. The guiding principle behind my buying decisions is to source products that I believe should also have an appeal for you, the adult in the equation, and which have a higher chance of complementing your home, whether that be traditional or contemporary. Most children inhabit a world full of popular characters and I like to think it's nice to have a sanctuary from that in their bedroom.
However, I confess. I have made an exception. For Hello Kitty.
Beloved of girls the world over, Kitty and her twin sister Mimmy inhabit a world that I know little of. I am more than happy with this state of affairs (although suspect that I shall become overly-familiar in due course as my toddler grows into a young girl). However, team the world of Hello Kitty with stylish prints from Liberty Art Fabrics and I become more interested. When I saw the Capital and Town collections, pictured below, I was struck by the fact that my eye was drawn to the print and the colours first, rather than to the Hello Kitty characters. Yes, they're there, small on the fabric print, large on the pillowcase, but somehow with a lot more sophistication than usual.
For those of you who have a daughter desperate for a Hello Kitty bedroom, these prints offer a wonderful alternative to the many garish Hello Kitty designs on the market. If you're actually not so keen yourself to deck out a room in character-led fashion, but are having your heart-strings tugged by a little girl, perhaps they will be a happy compromise?
In the Capital collection, above, there are single and double duvet sets, curtains, a beautiful quilted throw and three styles of cushion. Update: nearly all the Hello Kitty Capital items have sold out, but take a peek at new Hello Kitty Liberty Art designs here.
Update: Sorry, the Town collection has sold out too, but new designs have come into stock - see those in our store here!
